Women's points |
Berryville Orchard 5K | Mystery Distance Run | Family Run 5K Valentine's 3.4 Miler | Jim Barnett Pk. 3 Miler | Claymont Ramble |
Krista Farris may not have been able to catch Nancy Specht at the Mystery Distance Run on 16 January (pictured at right), but the young newcomer ended up coming out ahead in the race for the women's Winter Series title. Reportedly, Krista had been quite intent all winter long on winning an award in this, her very first Winter Series. Her solid performances ensured her of that. Nancy Specht was also quite consistent this year, despite being plagued by heel problems. In addition to taking first and second place in the Series, both Krista and Nancy have earned 100% Participation Awards, the only women to do so this year. Ladies, our collective hats are doffed to you! Also having an impressive Winter Series was Sandy Adams, who missed two races but still managed to come close to catching Nancy in the final point totals. Perhaps Sandy's third place plaque will make up for that nasty fall she took back in February! Heather Owens took fourth place on the strength of four solid Winter Series performances. And Kim Weisgerber managed to sneak into fifth place overall, thanks to Tracy Herron's non-appearance at the Claymont Ramble. The Webmaster does not mean to suggest that Miss Weisgerber was lucky, but...! To take a look at a race-by-race breakdown of the women's points, download this Microsoft Excel 95 spreadsheet. Obviously the spreadsheet can be viewed in any version of Excel dating from 1995 or later; it also might be viewable in Microsoft Works. A similar spreadsheet with the men's points can be found on the Men's Points page. Many many thanks to all of the race directors and volunteers for putting on an excellent Winter Series, and more thanks go out to Neal Riemenschneider, the gentleman who compiled the results and points. Neal breaks down the series for you in his Winter Series Analysis. But now let us gaze upon those points, shall we? |

Winter Series Point System Demystified! The system is simple, really. For each race, the victor gets 30 points, the runner up gets 29, third place gets 28, and so on down the list of finishers. All participants in each race are assigned points, regardless of whether or not they are club members. But here's the catch-- if a person runs all eight races, he or she loses the points from the race in which they placed the lowest. Therefore, only a person's best seven races count. For instance, Krista Farris has finished in third place in three races, so she gets 28 points for each of those. In other races, she's finished 8th, 7th, 5th, 4th, and 2nd, so she gets 23, 24, 26, 27, and 29 points respectively. This gives her a total of 213 points. But ah!-- she ran all eight races, but only her best seven races count! Thus, the 23 points from her lowest finish are discarded, leaving her with a total of 190 points for the Series. I'm sure your eyes have glazed over by now... |
