1998-99 Winter Series

Winter Series Analysis
by Neal Riemenschneider

  1. A total of 87 runners participated in at least one race.
  2. Four runners completed all 8 races: Krista Farris, Patrick Farris, Paul Grosz and Nancy Specht. This is the second year in a row for Paul and Nancy to have perfect attendance. (It is possible that they both may have a few more years of this streak going.) This means that only 5% of the total participants did the entire series.
  3. 13% (11 runners) did at least 7 events.
  4. 16% (14 runners) did at least 6 events.
  5. 28% (24 runners) did at least half (4) of the events.
  6. 54% (45 runners) were one hit wonders, as they did only one event.
  7. For the top 5 male finishers, Neal Riemenschneider only finished 6 events where as the others all finished 7.
  8. For the top 5 female finishers, the top 2 finishers Nancy and Krista did all 8 events (as previously noted) while Sandy Adams did 6. Both Heather Owens and Kim Weisgerber did 4.
  9. The race with the highest number of participants was the Predicted Run at FCMS with 37 participants, while Lincoln had the lowest with 23.
  10. The average turnout per race was 29 participants.
  11. The weather was very good, as all races where held as scheduled.
  12. The only brand new race was Mark Stickley’s Family 5K, which though held on familiar roads, took place at a new location.
  13. The One-Hour Run, after taking a lengthy hiatus, was put on by old timers Randy Wingfield and Pete Martin. The location had been used many times in the past.
Some races had new courses; Nancy’s Orchard Run, Powhatan Mystery Run (duh!), and the Claymont Race.

AWARDS I WOULD GIVE OUT:
  1. Best Food After A Race Award goes to the Lincoln event with those fresh bagels and plenty of cream cheese. Those of us who hung around got to take a dozen or so home.
  2. Best Use of A Finishing Kick Award goes to Mark Stickley at the Powhatan race. With a mile to go, Mark passed me and then blew me away in the last mile. I think he stopped for breakfast at the one-mile mark...
  3. Biggest Understatement by A Race Director goes to Raylene Scott of Lincoln who said of her Valentine's 3.4 Miler, "The course is a bit hilly."
  4. Best Awards goes to Mark Stickley’s race and those Blockbuster coupons. Ruth wanted to watch "The Horse Whisperer" while I wanted to watch "The Jail Escape of Iron Muscled Women." Guess who won...
  5. Best Fartlek Workout goes to Chris Northrup at the One-Hour Run. Every time the leaders would lap him he’d sprint with them for a minute.
  6. Best Pit Stop Award goes to an unnamed female at the One-Hour Run.
  7. Nicest New Member Award is a tie and goes to Krista and Patrick Farris. Welcome to the club guys!
  8. The Break The Silence Award goes to Mark Vann who, after reading a whole newsletter and not seeing his name listed, decided it was time to reunretire.
  9. The Race With The Best History Award goes to the Claymont race. Can’t beat good ole’ George Washington!
  10. Finally, the Best Race Director Award goes to all the race directors who did their best to give us enjoyable events. Randy & Pete, Rosie & Sharon, Nancy, Chris, Mark, Tom and the Kerbys.
See everyone back at it in December!
