Female 13 & Under

Congratulations to first-time Winter Series award winner Connie McKenzie! Her finish at race #7 was enough to clinch her the first place trophy in this age group. Connie's older brother Roy and her dad Joel also won age group awards this year, so it's been quite a haul for the McKenzie family!
Ineligible: Claire McLellan, Sarah Smaltz, Katie Spencer
Female 14-16
We saw eighteen girls aged 14-16 during this year's series, but none of 'em ran more than four races, so none of 'em reached the five-race eligibility requirement. But hey, it's hard to get to these races if you don't have a driver's license, so we can understand it!
Ineligible: Jillian Pollack, Katee Knupp, Nina Pfeiffer, Becky Stewart, Wendy Stober, Julia Mitchell, Emma Siegfried, Erin Germain, Jennifer Griffith, Bridget Ruotolo, Tara Franklin, Brittney Latshaw, Jennifer Thull, Elizabeth Hutson, Abby Fink, Linda Dunlap, Ashlee Goodie, Jamie Kidwell
Female 17-19
|
With newcomer Regina Gaetano taking one of the overall series awards, Rachel Eisenfeld and Kelsey Shroades had a wide-open shot at winning age group awards! Eisenfeld, last year's overall series winner and a senior at Sherando High School, missed three races but still accumulated enough points to take the first place trophy. This was the second Winter Series in which Shroades has participated, and the Hedgesville High School senior ventured down to Virginia for the last six races this year to earn herself a second place trophy. Nice work, you two!
Ineligible: Kristin Novara, Mary Naylor, Kelly Hunsecker, Elena Knupp, Laurel Thomas, Sarah Baumann, Brooke Borror, Teresa Knoll
Female 20-29
|
This was the first year that we've had more than two women eligible for an age group award in the 20-29 age group-- and all three of this year's award winners are newcomers to our club! Meg Roque joined the SVR at the Lincoln race in February-- by which point she already had a commanding lead in the age group. Marsha Soergel started participating a little late and was only able to run five races, but she signed up with the club at the Predicted Time 4 Miler and came away with the second place trophy. Finally, there's Erin Dusick, the cagey veteran-- having joined the SVR back in October! Dusick ran enough Winter Series races to take third place, and hopefully we'll be able to have the typo on her trophy corrected in time for the SVR Banquet. (The trophy people spelled her last name "Dusik", for some reason.)
Ineligible: Julie Bravin, Colleen Newton, Aimee Ruder, Chelsea O'Brien, Rachel Franklin, Fawn Morgan, Meghan Baird, Anu Mathew, Jessica Padgett, Tania Cubitt
Female 30-39
|
Here's another age group with a first-time winner! Sarah Gough joined our fine club at the Jingle Bell 5K in December, and her strong running over the course of the series left her just three points outside of the top five women overall. So no plaque, alas, but at least she'll get a nice trophy with her name on it! The battle for the other two age group trophies went right down to the wire... New club member Laura Shaffer started out slow but improved tremendously as the series continued, and by the Retro Ramble 3.8 Miler she was well on her way to taking the second place trophy. Third place, however, came down to a one-on-one matchup at that race between last year's 20-29 age group champ, Angie Page, and Sterling, VA's Kyra Brown. Whoever crossed the Retro Ramble finish line first would win the third place trophy... and Page jumped out ahead of Brown early and never relinquished the lead. So congratulations to Angie! (At least poor Kyra gets a perfect attendance award.)
Ineligible: Jill Devereux, Susan Musante, Michelle See, Brenda Schrank, Tracy Rice, Therese Brown, Harriette Bayse, Lisa Radler, Tina Gray, Lori Fountain-Bales, Norie Noll, Holly Loving, Jessica De Jong, Nova Peeples, Leesa Anderson, Kim Holway, Lauri Fauerbach Adams, Christine Helsel, Allison Karter, Kim Weisgerber-Craig, Susan Butler
Female 40-49
|
Kathy Manzo returned to the Winter Series with a vengeance this year-- or at least with a pair of strong legs! The winner of the 40-49 age group two years ago, Manzo had to sit out last year's series after having had foot surgery (she was nice enough to volunteer at a few races last year, though). But now she's back, and she cruised to her second age group win quite easily. Carol O'Leary's solid running at six of this year's races helped her to second place in the age group, while Carol Culvyhouse (who took second place in the 30-39 age group last year) ran well enough to take third. (We'd also like to recognize two runners who missed out on awards-- newcomer Patty Joyce, who ran the last seven races in the series, and Peggy Sweeney, who had been gunning for an award until she got hurt in a skiing accident. We hope both of 'em will be back next year!)
Ineligible: Ann Robb, Carolyn Wilson, Sarah Buckheit, Judy Masi, Donna Kenney, Frances Gipson, Judy Goffi, Kim Kendall, Mimi Boxwell, Mary Olien, Diane Daddio, Cindi Irwin
Female 50-59
|
What else can we say about Johnson-Williams Middle School teacher and Clarke County High School cross-country & track coach Nancy Specht? Specht has not missed an SVR Winter Series event in over a decade; she's finished in the top five overall in three out of the last seven Winter Series; she's won a couple series age group awards in years when she missed out on the top five; and she hasn't finished lower than eighth overall in the series since the Webmaster's records begin. Not bad, eh?
Ineligible: Paget Humphreys, Cathy Van Brocklin, Jeanette Novak, Meg Reedy
Female 60-69
|
Our club only has six members who would fall into this age group, and Kathy Smart was the only one of 'em who ran a Winter Series race this year! Kathy, who won last year's 50-59 age group as a 59-year-old, is actually our first-ever Winter Series award winner in the women's 60-69 age group. Maybe she'll have some more competition next year...?
Female 70 & Over
I can't recall us having seen a single participant in this age group since we started doing the Winter Series age group awards a few years back... and at the rate we're going, we may have to wait until Kathy Smart makes it to this age group ten years from now!
