| Male 13 & Under |
|
| How 'bout new club members Nathan Thatcher and Mike Joyce, eh? Nathan ran every race this year and earned first place easily. He benefitted, however, from the extra points he picked up at the poorly-attended race #1, a race which Mike didn't run. Mike first appeared at race #2 and came to every race after that, easily nabbing second place in the age group. The competition between the two was close, with Mike beating Nathan four out of seven times the two matched up, but with Nathan earning more points (even if you discard his total from race #1). The two were seen finishing right near each other at the last couple races in the series, so we're glad they didn't turn into mortal enemies during the series. Congratulations to both of 'em! |
| Ineligible: Bobby Vance, Jack Jasper, Jake Lewin |
| Male 14-16 |
|
| More trophies for the shelves of Roy McKenzie and Nathan Tomberlin! Roy finished second in the 13 & under age group two years ago (missing out on first by just one point!), but this year he had a much easier time winning the 14-16 age group. Nathan, meanwhile, had to run the Retro Ramble 3.8 Miler in order to meet the five-race eligibility requirement and earn his second Winter Series award (he placed second in the 13 & under age group last year), so your author was glad when he saw Nathan crossing the finish line at that race. |
| Ineligible: Simon Biddle-Snead, Henry Melius, Ware Smalley, Clint Schiavone, Eric Truschel, Robert Verdecchia, Eric Ekholm, Joseph Ulisse, Ryan Lee, Jonathan Quigley, Thomas Gerber |
| Male 17-19 |
| No male 17-19 awards this year. Only twins Eli & Jake Green ran more than one Winter Series race, but neither twin ran more than three apiece, meaning they fell short of the five-race eligibility requirement. We haven't actually had an award winner in this age group since the 2000-2001 series. Ah well-- maybe next year! |
| Ineligible: Jake Green, Eli Green, David Bolton, Andy Franklin, James Printz, Nathan Marsh, Mike Robertson Jr., James Rock, Trenton Norgaard |
| Male 20-29 |
|
| Huzzah to the amazing Charles Bowles! With Robbie Olsen taking one of the overall awards, Chuck nets a tall trophy for winning the men's 20-29 age group. This is actually the Bowleser's first Winter Series age group award, as he has been in the habit of finishing in the top five overall over the past few years. He just missed it this year by three points! Speaking of folks who have finished in the top five before, '97-'98 overall men's champion Karsten Brown earned second place in the age group. (Hey, don't begrudge Karsten his one moment of glory, even if it was six years ago!) And hanging on for third place was first-time Winter Series award winner and hard-working runner Dave Farinholt! (Poor Mike Brosenne could've caught Dave for third if he had finished 11th or better at the Retro Ramble 3.8 Miler. Brosenne will be back, though!) |
| Ineligible: J.J. Alcott, Peter Manzoli, Bobby Lockhart, James Tugwell, Jared Prunty, Kevin Patterson-Kemp, Ryan Bayne, Pablo Vivian, Jeremy Spitzer, Karl Ellcessor IV, Ian Morris, Robert Drake, Dustin Lawyer, Chris Mille, Dan Siegle, Brandon Padgett |
| Male 30-39 |
|
| Big Ray Bollock certainly fared well in his first SVR Winter Series! Ray had the first place award in the men's 30-39 age group all wrapped up after race #7, once Brad Rippey and Mark Vann had clinched their top five overall finishes. With his trophy already clinched, Ray then ran the Retro Ramble 3.8 Miler at a nice, leisurely pace (as did Vann). Steven Viers could not afford to be leisurely, however, because he had to beat Jose Zambonino Silva if he wanted any chance at moving up from third to second place in the age group. Both men ended up having terrific performances at the Ramble, and despite Jose's improvement in speed this year, Steven worked his way past Jose and finished one place ahead of him, leaving the two runners in a tie for second place in the age group. We're glad to see both of 'em getting trophies! |
| Ineligible: Mike Capraro, Peter Mattens, Lawrence Kusko, Dale Learn, Eric Dempster, Paul Justice, Mark Hand, Duddits Cavell, John Rice, Jim Carty, Dr. Julius Hibbert, Andy Lewin, Greg Johnson, Rob Dulin, Brian Miller, Chris Spencer, Patrick Farris |
| Male 40-49 |
|
| It's two in a row for Mike Meadows! Meadows won the 40-49 age group last year, and this year he emerged victorious again despite taking it easy at race #8-- although he had already picked up enough points on runner-up Joel McKenzie by then. At least McKenzie also gets a trophy this year... Two years ago, Meadows took the last trophy in this age group by edging out McKenzie by just four points. We're glad they both got something this time. Also getting something is newcomer Mark Berg, whose hard work and perfect attendance have helped him win a trophy for third place. Welcome to the club, Mark! |
| Ineligible: Myron Kremer, Neal Riemenschneider, Dave Gearhart, Scott Siegel, James Rohr, Cliff Tell, Kennon Yeck, John Winkert, Bill Stahr, Tim Quigley, Don Smaltz, Kevin Shea, Chris Ricci, Kevin Rooney, Chris Thompson, Mike Allen, Joseph Hutson, Jerry Franklin, Keith Baker, Chuck Call, Rick Kerby, Robert Decker Jr., Greg Printz, Steve Breeden, Jim Thull, Fred Riley, Robert Russon, Berne Stober, Karl Ellcessor III, Chris Guillaudeu, Ed Johnson, Keith Jasper, Dan Goggins, Pete Bracken, Stirling Young, Michael Eisenfeld |
| Male 50-59 |
|
| Being at the high end of a ten-year age group usually puts one at a disadvantage, but that's rarely the case for Patrick Griffith! The 59-year-old from Alexandria, VA came to the last six Winter Series races this year, never finished a race lower than 12th overall, and absolutely cleaned up in this age group. 55-year-old Bill Senseney may not have been able to keep up with Griffith, but he's a good runner in his own right, and he's taken the second place award-- his first Winter Series award since the '98-'99 series! 58-year-old Randy Wingfield, meanwhile, has won a Winter Series age group award every year since we added 'em to the series in '00-'01, and his streak continues this year with his third place age group finish. |
| Ineligible: Jason Page, Todd Knapp, Ed Mayhew, Ric Francke, Terry Bursey, Ray Kitchen, Moe Morris, Jon Campbell, Butch Proctor, Dave Crawford, Bill Osuch, Fred Franklin, Howard Campbell, John Patterson, John Crandell, Leonard Yang, R.J. Turner, James Moreland, Jerry Naylor |
| Male 60-69 |
|
| It's rare to see the standings stay the same in an age group from the beginning of the series all the way to the end of it, but that's how it's been in the men's 50-59 age group! Doug Morris, Terry McCarthy, and Bob Gurtler finished one-two-three at the Mystery Distance Run, and that's where they've ended up finishing for the whole series. This will be Doug's first Winter Series age group award, Terry's second, and Bob's third. So congratulations to all three! (And congrats as well to Glenn Luttrell and Woody Long, neither of whom were in the running for an award but who showed up at the last few Winter Series races anyway!) |
| Ineligible: Garnett Howard |
| Male 70 & Over |
|
| The first place award in the men's 70 & over age group should be called the "Bob Atkins Award", since the 78-year-old has never failed to win it in the four years we've been handing out Winter Series age group awards! At his age, Bob definitely deserves these trophies. In a couple years, though, Bob might have some competition... because that's when Terry McCarthy and Bob Gurtler will jump up to this age group! |
| Ineligible: Robie Cone |
