Winter Series in review Final women's standings: overall, age groups Final men's standings: overall, age groups Arlington's Susan Musante may not be from the Shenandoah Valley, but she's certainly done well for herself out here! The 33-year-old joined the SVR in January, won her first five Winter Series races, and had the overall women's Winter Series win wrapped up after the seventh race. Welcome to the club, Susan, and congratulations! Behind Susan, Sherando High Schooler Rachel Eisenfeld improved on her fourth-place showing in last year's series, finishing second overall this year-- just one point ahead of Martinsburg's Tracy Rice! The battle for second could hardly have been closer. To hang onto second, Rachel had to beat Tracy and finish fifth or higher at the final race, the Claymont Retro Ramble 5K. Rachel pulled ahead of Tracy during the second half of the race, and she made it to the finish in fifth place! Tracy has nothing of which to be ashamed, however, as her third place finish is the highest she's ever placed in the Winter Series. This year's series also saw a very close battle for fourth place. 1998-99 Winter Series champ Krista Farris was tied for fourth with Germantown, MD's Kammy Horne going into Claymont, so whoever beat the other would take fourth outright. Kammy gave it a shot, but the competitive Krista ran her fastest 5K time of the series and scampered away with the award. Not to worry, though-- newcomer Kammy gets an award for fifth, and she says she had a blast during the series! Four women finished the series with perfect attendance: Krista, Kathy Manzo, Colleen Snyder, and Nancy Specht. Nancy has reportedly not missed a Winter Series race in something like ten years! Kathy and Colleen could be starting their own streaks-- this is the first Winter Series for each, I believe. It was nice to see all of 'em at race after race! Names of SVR members in the standings below appear in blue, and names of runners with perfect attendance appear in bold. At each race, each runner was assigned points based on how they finished against members of their own sex-- 100 points for first, 99 for second, etc. The final tally of points, listed in the "-2" column, consists of each runner's best six point totals. Series awards were given to the top five overall, to the top two runners in various age groups, and to those with perfect attendance.
