Winter Series in review Final women's standings: overall, age groups Final men's standings: overall, age groups 19-year-old Dustin Sweeney is the king of the Winter Series! Having won the 1999-2000 Winter Series and finishing second overall the year before, the Hagerstown Community College student & Clarke County High School alum has added another first overall plaque to his already strained trophy shelf. Dustin won five of the eight Winter Series races this year and clinched the title with his win at the seventh race, the Predicted Time 5K. Yet he still came out to the final race, the Claymont Retro Ramble 5K, and kicked everyone's butt! That kid knows how to run. The same can also be said about DC-area legend and new SVR member Ted Poulos, although at 40 years of age he's no longer a kid. But he certainly runs like it, winning countless races every year and now capturing another award with his second place Winter Series finish. Speedy Frank Curiel skipped out on the final two races but already had a lock on a top five finish; his running proved good enough for third overall. Winchester lawyer and perpetual running retiree Mark Vann took fourth, his highest finish since coming in third in the 1997-98 series. And fifth overall went to 19-year-old Charles Bowles, who finished fourth last year, sixth the year before that, and who has only missed one Winter Series race in the past three years. Good going, Chuckles! There were only four perfect attendees in last year's series, but with the skyrocketing participation levels this year, we ended up with fourteen men who ran every race! So let's give props to David Black, Peter Blank (who lives all the way up in Annandale!), Mike Capraro (from eastern Loudoun County), Fred Franklin, Paul Grosz, Terry Leckie, Glenn Luttrell, Joel McKenzie, Roy McKenzie (the youngest perfect attendee this year), Mike Meadows, Michael Triantafillou, Mark Vann, and Randy Wingfield (the only repeat perfect attendee from last year)! Karsten Brown also gets a nod, given the exemption made for race directors (he directed the Predicted Time 5K). What dedication! Names of SVR members in the standings below appear in blue, and names of runners with perfect attendance appear in bold. At each race, each runner was assigned points based on how they finished against members of their own sex-- 100 points for first, 99 for second, etc. The final tally of points, listed in the "-2" column, consists of each runner's best six point totals. Series awards were given to the top five overall, to the top two runners in various age groups, and to those with perfect attendance. See the men's age groups page for the age group standings.
