Winter Series #2:
Frederick Middle School 4-Miler

The weather was a very comfortable 40 degrees for the second race in the winter series. 36 runners turned out to test themselves on this predict your time event. No watches were allowed and no splits were given at the mile markers.

Construction at the medical center necessitated a course change. Runners were directed around the back pond of the complex and ran on loose gravel and a dirt path for less than a half mile. Then they had to endure the long climb up to Shenandaoh University's School of Pharmacy.

Neal Riemenschneider took the lead from the word "GO" and never looked back, crossing the finish line first in 22:53. David Clay , a member of Clarke County's state-placing cross country team, was second in 23:17. Karsten Black (and his flowing hair) was third in 23:22. Karsten could play with Yanni, as everyone in his band has stylishly long hair. Can you play an instrument, Karsten?

For the women, Kim Burns let Ruth Riemenschneider lead for the first mile then made her move. Streaking through the woods, Burns hit the pavement with a short lead that she held to the finish. Burns worked the long hill really hard and finished first with a time of 26:15. Riemenschneider (26:39) hung on for second while Warren County cross country stand out Jamie Weikle (27:03) took third.

Louis Sweet and Randy Wingfield tied as the winners of the predict -your -time contest. Both came within 13 seconds of their predicted time. Nancy Specht was next in 14 seconds. The race was put on by Rosie Schiavone and Sharon Farinholt with help from Jerry Anderson.

Winter Series #3:
Berryville 5K

It what can only be described as treacherous conditions, the Berryville Winter Series was held partly on the Clarke County Fitness Course. This part of the course saw a messy combination of wet ground, mud, ice and snow. With all of the turns, runners had to take it very easy while navigating this section of the course. Personally, I wanted to kiss the road when we got back on it. Give me good ole terra firma any day!

Bobby Lockhart led from wire to wire en route to a 18:27 victory. Except for David Clay trying to keep up in the first 1/2 mile, Lockhart ran solo to victory with no one pressuring him. Master runner Neal Riemenschneider passed Clay around the one mile mark and finished second in 18:45. Up and coming runner Karsten Black (19:18) took third while race director Mark Vann (19:40) was fourth. Clay faded to fifth finishing in 19:58

For the women, Kim Burns sped to an early lead and also led from wire to wire finishing in 20:54. Second place went to Carolyn Wilson (21:38) while master runner Sandra Adams (22:38), Jamie Weikle (23:25) and Ruth "I hate running in this stuff" Riemenschneider (23:33) rounded out the top five.

There was plenty of food and drinks after the race while Kim Weisgerber gave out three odd awards to; muddiest shirt (Bobby Lockhart), most shoes brought (Mark Vann) and Father of the Year (Ray Weisgerber). Also, four lucky finishers received 10 bucks in cash in a random drawing.
